Why choose the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is home to ten million people (slightly more than the population of New York City). Due to its location, surrounded by Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia, most major European cities are just around the corner, and the country is very well connected to its neighbours, both geographically and culturally. The Czech Republic is full of hidden surprises for those curious enough to find them.
As an international student you are probably wondering what to expect.
There is something for everyone here – let us give you a few reasons why it is the best place to be!
Did you know that you can visit as many as 14 UNESCO heritage sites in the Czech Republic? The country is rich in cultural heritage, with unique sites around every corner. Charles University is named after King Charles IV, who established the university in 1348: we are the oldest university in Central Europe.
Living costs in the Czech Republic are still reasonable compared to many other countries. Our students can benefit from subsidised dormitory accommodation and affordable dining at our student canteens. Some students also choose to work alongside their studies.
The Czech Republic is ranked the 8th safest country in the world (according to the 2020 Global Peace Index). The country has a stable government, there is a low risk of natural disasters, and road accident rates are relatively low.

Thanks to its location in the centre of Europe, it is very easy and convenient to travel around by plane, bus, or train. Prague is just 4 hours by bus or train from other major European cities such as Berlin or Vienna! Various carriers, including low cost airlines, operate flights from the Czech Republic to popular destinations in Europe and beyond, and the country is exceptionally well served by rail transport as well as offering many bus connections.
Prague has one of the best public transportation systems in Europe. With a student pass (costing around 50 € per year) you can reach every corner of the city quickly and conveniently using the metro, trams and buses. Ferries across the river and a funicular to the top of the Petřín hill in the centre of the city are also part of the network.
Even the biggest cities in the Czech Republic have parks where you can relax. Indeed, Prague is the greenest metropolis in the world! Weekends are made for trips, though – there is so much to discover all over the country: mountains, lakes, forests and castles are waiting for you, and plenty more. Don't be afraid to explore!
Various cultural events take place throughout the year. If you are a film fan, you might have heard about the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival or the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, while music lovers will enjoy Colours of Ostrava, Rock for People or the Prague Spring festival of classical music.
We are home to world-class engineers and scientists. The Czech Republic has a strong industrial sector, and our business and research centres are encouraged to use new and innovative technologies, for example in IT-related services, cybersecurity, science or nanotechnology. In addition, the highly skilled workforce, low unemployment and thriving startup ecosystem put the country on the radar for well-known businesses.
If you are less than 26 years old, you receive a 75 % fare discount on train and bus transport, giving you a great opportunity to explore our beautiful country. With the International Student Identity Card (ISIC), students also receive discounts in restaurants and shops and on books, festival tickets, sports facilities etc.
